In a spiritual sense, many Christians find they are stuck in the present. To be “stuck in the present” means you are always overwhelmed by the immediate.
You have forgotten what God has done for you in the past, and are unable to envision what he has for you down the road, all because you are stuck in the worry over the right now. Consequently, for you the right now never changes.
Worry keeps us stuck in the present. Fortunately, Jesus tells us how to get unSTUCK in Matthew 6…
Step 1 – Realize worry is a choice
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?” – Matthew 6:25 (NIV)
Step 2 – Observe and Learn
“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” … “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?” – Matthew 6:26, 28-30 (NIV)
Step 3 – Accept the fact that some things are out of your control
“Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” – Matthew 6:27 (NIV)
Step 4 – Make the Commitment to Trust
“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.” – Matthew 6:31-32 (NIV)
Step 5 – Shift your focus
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” – Matthew 6:33-34 (NIV)
Don’t let worry keep you stuck in the present. God will help you MOVE BEYOND a life filled with worry to a life filled with trust in His providence and protection.
