Conflicting Values

Conflicting Values

Jesus has words of commendation for the church at Pergamum. He said, “I know where you live—where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me.” (Revelation 2:13) Many, indeed had remained true and faithful; but not all.

Some in Pergamum who claimed the name of Christ had given in to the temptation that they could simultaneously serve the Lord and be involved in practices that fly in the face of the truth of God’s Word. Apparently, it had been going on without any challenge from others in the church.

Jesus’ word to all of them is, “Repent!” He calls on them to change direction before it is too late.

Through all sorts of media, we are bombarded every day with conflicting values. Fortunately, as followers of Christ, we are not left to guess which values are the right ones for us. We have the Bible as our guide for what is right and what is wrong, and to define what is good and what is evil. God’s Word does not change, so it is a consistent and reliable guide for us.

Society, however, would have us believe everything is evolving. There is a clever trick that is often employed to get believers to follow along with that line of thinking. Biblical values are no longer called Biblical values. They are called “traditional values.”

You see, when the terminology is changed from “Biblical values” to “traditional values,” it is easier to convince people that such values are out of date, or are evolving, or are in need of revision. So as individual Christians, and corporately as a body of believers, we need to be careful and recognize it for what it is; a lie.

God’s Word is truth. If we are allowing ourselves to be led to believe otherwise, then we need to consider repenting as well.

Your Pastor,

David Hulme
