A recent study examined teenagers between the ages of 15-18 to try to figure out why some drop out of church, or abandon their faith, and why some stay. Amidst all the stats was one that jumped out at me. The main reason young believers, ages 15-18, stay connected to church, and grow in their faith, is “at least one adult from church made a significant investment in me personally and spiritually.”
Discipling (mentoring, teaching, training, being a role model for) less mature believers is an often neglected responsibility of those of us who have devoted our lives to becoming more like Jesus. Simply put, mature Christians are falling down on the job when it comes to helping, not just the next generation, but also the current generation of believers to grow toward spiritual maturity.
I want to challenge you to MOVE BEYOND just being a disciple by seeking out and investing your life in someone who is growing in their faith and could benefit from your knowledge and experience. It doesn’t have to be a young person; just someone younger than you in their faith. You don’t have to be perfect and have a seminary degree in theology. You just have to be willing and committed.
Gratefully,
