Have you ever had an instance in your life where you felt you were so close but yet so far away? The Russians in WW2 felt this way after they invented the “dog mine.” This new and innovative weapon idea was to train dogs to associate food with the undersides of tanks, in the hope that they would run hungrily beneath advancing Panzer divisions. Bombs were then strapped to the dogs’ backs, which meant certain doom for these canines. This weapon was put into commission the first day of the Russian involvement in WW2. Unfortunately for the Russians, the dogs associated food only with the undersides of Russian tanks. The dogs with bombs on their backs forced an entire Soviet division to retreat. The “dog mine” was quickly decommissioned after one day of service.

The story of Jonah is one of the most memorable and well known stories in the Bible. Jonah and the whale has been a story told to children throughout the ages. But Jonah, like we all do, had his downfalls. Strangely enough, Jonah also had many similarities with Jesus. Jonah had some things in common with Jesus, but he was yet so far away.

Let’s list the similarities and differences.

Jonah and Jesus were both from Galilee. They both had a mission from God. Jonah struggled with his mission and ran away. Jesus submitted to His mission and laid down His life. Jesus awoke on a ship and calmed the storm. Jonah was also awoken on a ship and after being awoken on the ship, Jonah calmed the storm too, but in a much different way. He was tossed overboard because of his disobedience to God. Both Jonah and Jesus were entombed for 3 days. Jonah entombed in the whale because of his sin. Jesus entombed in the earth because of our sin.

There were some similarities between Jonah and Jesus, but they couldn’t be more different. Don’t be like Jonah, be like Jesus. Love your enemies and submit to God’s will.
