1 Timothy 6:12-16 says, “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.”
In this letter, Paul is urging Timothy not to quit, but to keep moving forward. The word “fight” in the Greek is the same word translated agonize. It speaks of discipline, concentration, and extreme effort. Paul urges Timothy to remember that this life is temporary but the next one is eternal.
Jesus is the ultimate example of fighting the good fight of faith. He didn’t give up in the face of extreme agony.
Just like John the Baptist announced the coming of our Lord the first time, we are to contend for the faith and prepare the way for Jesus’s next coming! Jesus will return to set the world right, to rule and reign in His kingdom. These thoughts motivate us to remain faithful even in the most difficult trials.
Just like Jesus’s first coming, God set the right moment before the foundation of the world for this glorious event to occur. At the first advent, we see this happen “when the fullness of time had come.” This second advent God will “display at the proper time.” Hold on to the faith! Do not waiver! The King of Kings and the Lord of Lords is coming, prepare the way!
In Christ,
Pastor Phil
