It seems that we live in an increasingly polarized society. Around the world, in our nation, and in our own communities there are deep divisions on a number of issues.
As believers in Christ, it is important for us to consider our role in the midst of such a polarized society. It is also important for us to seek guidance regarding which people should be shaping our opinions and influencing our actions related to the issues that polarize us.
Fortunately, James 3:13-18 provides us with guidance:
1. Wisdom and understanding are about how we live…not just about what we know. (James 3:13)
Do you want to know if you are wise and an agent of unity or an agent of polarization? Look at your works and your humility.
Do you want to be able to identify, amidst all the noise, the wise people whom you should follow? Look at their works and their humility.
“Our works show where our hearts are invested.” (Life Application NT Commentary)
2. There are only two kinds of wisdom (James 3:14-18)
- Godly wisdom – wisdom that comes from one source…God.
- Worldly wisdom – wisdom that comes from anywhere else.
Not only is there an obvious difference between the two, their applications bring vastly different results.
3. There are only two ways to look at the world (James 3:14-18)
- Using Worldly Wisdom – “there you find disorder and every evil practice.” (James 3:15)
- Using Godly Wisdom – “Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.” (James 3:18)
Which wisdom are you, and the people you follow, using? I think it’s pretty obvious which one stands a better chance of ending society’s polarization.
Gratefully,
