- When We Pray
Prayer can be hard sometimes. For me, many times, the problem is getting started. Here are some things that you could try to help spark your prayer life to be more vibrant and less cold.
1. Start off with praying a Psalm. Apply the Psalm to your life and make it personal. Augustine of Hippo said, “If the psalm prays, you pray. If the psalm laments, you lament. If the psalm exalts, you rejoice. If it hopes, you hope. If it fears, you fear. Everything written here is a mirror for us.”
2. Start with gratitude. Make a list of all the good things that God has done for you, and then spend time thanking Him for each of them.
3. Start with praying for the lost. Pick a few people in your life that need to accept the gift of hope that comes through Jesus Christ.
4. Start with a worship song. Quiet your mind, put your phone out of reach, turn on a song that points to who God is, and pray the song to Him.
5. Start with the Model Prayer. You can use Matthew 6:9-13 or Luke 11:1-4 as a launching point to structure your prayer life. “Our Father… My Father… thank you for treating me as your child… thank you for being patient”…. “Who is in Heaven… God, you are far above me but yet so close… you created the heavens and the earth….”
6. Use a daily prayer guide. Perhaps you have trouble getting stuck praying the same prayers over and over; your prayer life is dry. There are many books and apps out there that can guide launch your life into personal prayer. Below are several free apps that have daily prayer guides to help you get started. There are some options in some of these to purchase more content, but each has valuable content that is free.
* Abide App – Prayer and scripture mediation
* YouVersion Bible App – Guided daily prayers
* The Churchome App – Guided daily prayers
Jesus said, “When you pray….” Regardless of how you get started, pray!
