In John’s Gospel, Jesus often began His most important statements with the words “Truly, truly.”

When He said it to Nicodemus in John 3, it came as a wake-up call. Nicodemus was religious, respected, and curious,  but still empty. Jesus told him the truth he didn’t expect: “You must be born again.” Then He pointed Nicodemus to a familiar story from the Old Testament, a bronze serpent lifted up in the wilderness. Through God’s power, everyone who looked at it was cured. Jesus said, “So must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life.”

The message was simple: healing and new life aren’t found in what we know or who we are, but in who we look to.

Later, in John 6, Jesus said “Truly, truly” again this time to a crowd. But they weren’t seeking truth; they were chasing the benefits. They had seen miracles and eaten the bread, but missed the point. Jesus said, “I am the Bread of Life.” He wasn’t offering another meal; He was offering Himself.

Two groups heard the same truth,  one man who came sincerely and found life, and one crowd who came selfishly and walked away spiritually hungry.

Every day, we stand in the same place. We can chase temporary satisfaction, the things that fill us for a moment, or we can look to Jesus, the only One who truly satisfies.

The invitation is still the same: Look to the Son lifted up. Believe. Live.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You are the Bread of Life, the only one who can truly satisfy.
Forgive us for chasing what doesn’t last, and help us to look to You alone.
Thank You for being lifted up so we could live.
Strengthen our faith today, and teach us to trust You fully.
Amen.
