Life is made up of moments. Right now as you are reading this we are having a “moment.” I spent it weeks ago as I sat down at my computer to give you this message that follows up to the sermon about the end of King David’s life. Life is made up of moments. But the little decisions you make in these moments determine your destiny. I believe there are 2-3 monumental moments in our lives… these monumental moments are pass/fail. These big decisions can have life-altering consequences for the good or bad. I’ve had these big moments in my life. The first was Salvation way back when I was 8 years old. The next was as a young man I felt God move in my life pushing me to leave Downingtown Pennsylvania, to go study to be in the ministry and moving to Hot Springs Arkansas. That was tough. I can trace just about every good thing in my life back to that decision, that moment. At that time I was a 20 year old man working at Chuck E Cheese and going to community college. But in a moment God changed my life and led me to the place He would have me go. My wife, my kids, my friends, my jobs, and the ministries God has allowed me to serve in have all stemmed from that one moment. If in those couple moments I ignored the voice of God impressing on my heart and I made the wrong choice it would have had cataclysmic effects on my life. Our Christian life is all about preparing for these monumental moments.
- David was faithful to protect his sheep before He stood in front of Goliath.
- Daniel was faithful in his daily prayer life before He stood before the den of lions.
- Abraham was faithful in trusting God and leaving His home before the test to lay Isaac on the altar.
- Joseph was faithful to run from sin and Potiphar’s wife before He stood in the palace.
Little moments prepare you for big moments. Jesus says it this way “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much (Luke 16:10).” We saw on Sunday that David wanted his son to understand the importance of these moments. On David’s deathbed, he wanted his son to know that these big moments were coming… and his son Solomon would have these decisions to make. King David had made good decisions and bad decisions… He felt great victory and horrendous pain. He wanted his son to have more victory and joy than pain. Here was David’s hope for Solomon in every one of those big moments, “Be strong in the Lord and follow His ways. If you do that, I know from experience, you will be blessed.” In order to do that in the big moments, we have to do it in the small ones, every day. Be faithful in the little moments, and God will take care of you in the big moments.
