True greatness in the Kingdom of Jesus is never about our elevation but the elevation of Jesus. This was the heart of the message this past Sunday. Walking in Jesus’ footsteps challenges us to see the world and all it has to offer through the lens and teachings of Jesus. He redefined greatness and revealed that he alone is great and worthy of our praise and affection.
As we continue to dig deeper into what it means to follow Jesus, I want to share a quote from author Bob Goff that powerfully reframes our understanding of success and greatness: “I used to be afraid that I wouldn’t make enough money; now I’m afraid I won’t make enough difference.”
This quote strikes at the heart of the shift God calls us to make in measuring greatness. For many of us, the world’s definition of success—whether it’s making more money, climbing the ladder at work, or being known for our achievements—has shaped our ambitions. But as followers of Jesus, we are invited to pursue a greater purpose: not to elevate our name but to lift up His name and make a lasting difference for His Kingdom.
Jesus teaches us that true greatness is found not in power, recognition, or wealth, but in humility and service. In Luke 9, when His disciples were caught arguing over who would be the greatest, Jesus reminded them—and us—that it’s the one who humbles themselves, like a child, who is truly great in the Kingdom.
Bob Goff’s words remind us that what really matters isn’t how much we accumulate or how many accolades we receive. What matters is how we love, serve, and impact others in Jesus’ name. It’s easy to get caught up in striving for more in our lives, but the real question we need to ask ourselves is this: Are we making a difference in God’s Kingdom? Are we living in such a way that people see Jesus through us?
This week, I encourage you to take time to reflect on where your focus lies. Are you striving for success as the world defines it, or are you seeking to follow Jesus and make a difference for His glory?
Here are a few ways you can take that step:
1. Re-evaluate Your Priorities: What drives your decisions, ambitions, and actions? Pray and ask God to align your heart with His desires—to focus on making a difference rather than making a name for yourself.
2. Look for Ways to Serve: Greatness in God’s Kingdom is about lifting others up, not ourselves. Find one way this week to serve someone around you—whether it’s a neighbor, coworker, or someone in need—without seeking recognition.
3. Share Jesus Through Your Actions: Our world is hungry for hope and meaning. How can you, through your everyday actions, point people to Jesus? Remember, your influence isn’t about being in the spotlight—it’s about being the light in someone’s life.
As a church, let’s commit to living differently. Let’s set aside the pursuit of personal greatness and instead pursue Jesus, trusting that as we elevate His name, He will work through us to make a difference that echoes into eternity.
I’m praying for each of you this week as we take steps toward redefining greatness in our lives. Let’s be known not for what we’ve achieved, but for how we’ve loved and served in the name of Jesus.
