I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world! – John 16:33
There have been times in my life where I have been so far from peace, that the concept didn’t even make sense anymore. Turmoil, anguish, and emotional distress are real things in this life. In this verse, Jesus just got done telling these people if they ask God for something in His name that God will hear them. He is telling them they can go directly to God because of Him. But then Jesus goes on and tells them that they will be scattered and He will be left all alone. Jesus is clear that life won’t be easy but that even when they are alone, they are not alone. They have a Father in Heaven that loves them, and because of that they can take courage, and have peace. Jesus has already overcome the enemy!
Now, peace is not just calmness. You can have a calm day on a boat and still be in turmoil on the inside. Peace is not the absence of crisis. Check the news, there is always a crisis. Tony Evans says, “The peace that Jesus is talking about is something that only He can give, and it’s something that believers can experience in a crisis. In reality, you can’t know if you truly have peace until you are in a crisis.”
Regardless of what you are going through today, take courage. You can have peace, because Jesus has conquered it all!
