“Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions .” – Luke 12:15

Greed is one of those sneaky heart issues inside of us that often go undetected in our lives. It disguises itself as wisdom, planning, or even stewardship—but deep down, it’s a refusal to trust God with what we have and what we might lose. Jesus warned us in Luke 12:15 to “be on guard against all kinds of greed,” reminding us that life isn’t found in possessions. Greed convinces us that what we have is ours to keep, but the gospel flips that idea upside down: everything we have is a gift from God, and He invites us to live with open hands. Like the monkey in the trap, we can find ourselves clinging tightly to things we think we need, only to realize it’s our grip that’s keeping us stuck.

If we truly believe God is our provider and sustainer, then we are free to give generously, knowing we won’t run out. Greed is conquered through trust, trusting that God will meet our needs, and through intentional generosity. It’s not about how much we have, but what we do with it. Start small if you need to, but start somewhere. Give first, save second, live on the rest. Ask God today: “What do You want me to do with what You’ve given me?” And then, trust Him enough to obey.

Prayer:
God, reveal the places in my heart where I’ve been holding too tightly. Help me to trust You more than I trust my savings, my plans, or my stuff. Teach me to live with open hands and a generous spirit. I don’t want to waste what You’ve given me, I want to use it for Your glory. Amen.
