Self-deception is the mental state of the lukewarm Christian. Lukewarm describes those who call themselves Christians, but possess neither a fiery passion for the things of God, nor a cold, refreshing purity. Self-deception tends to focus on a couple of areas of a Christian’s life.
First, self-deception can be found in self-sufficiency. In Revelation 3, the church in Laodicea was located in a very prosperous and wealthy city. From all indications, the church was wealthy as well. Unfortunately, those in the church had become lukewarm in their relationship to Christ because they were putting more value on the things they could see and buy, rather than the things that are unseen and eternal.
Secondly, self-deception happens when virtues are perceived in oneself that simply do not exist. A classic example is when someone not only perceives himself/herself to be a good person by earthly standards, but thinks that “goodness” is going to somehow get them into heaven.
Jesus says to the lukewarm, self-deceiving Laodiceans, “You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.” (Revelation 3:17 NIV) The truth is the exact opposite of their evaluation of themselves.
What, then is the remedy for this self-deception? Jesus says, “I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.” (Revelation 3:18 NIV)
Jesus is saying…
- They are to buy their gold (real spiritual treasure) from Him.
- They are to purchase white clothes (righteousness) from Him.
- They are to get medicine from him to heal their eyes (so they can see the truth).
True value is not found in material possessions or self-perceived virtues, but in a right relationship with God. Our possessions and achievements are valueless compared with the everlasting riches and glory of Christ’s kingdom. So, we should stop trying to convince ourselves otherwise.
