When you find a reference to an open door in the New Testament, you will find an opportunity. Sometimes the opportunity is to enter into something. Other times the opportunity is go out and accomplish something. The one thing that is the same in both situations is who opens the door.
For example, in Acts, Paul and Barnabas “gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them and how he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles.” Acts 14:27 (NIV2011)
While it is certainly important for us to know that God opens doors of opportunity, and that great things happen when we take advantage of those opportunities, there is another aspect we sometimes overlook. It is found in Jesus’ letter to the church in Philadelphia.
“I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.” Revelation 3:8 (NIV2011)
Not only does He open doors, but He is also the only one who can close them. In other words, when we are timid about taking advantage of opportunities because we are afraid of opposition, we need to remember that no amount of opposition can close what God opens.
So, walk through those doors of opportunity with confidence, knowing that the one who controls the opening and closing also provides the strength needed in that moment of opportunity.
