We are called to be faithful no matter the circumstances in which we find ourselves. That includes the workplace.
In Revelation 2:18-29, Christians in Thyatira were faced with a dilemma. In order to work, they had to belong to a trade guild. The problem was that those who belonged to those guilds were pressured to participate in all kinds of activities that were contrary to Christian beliefs.
Rather than taking a stand, many were accepting of a false teaching that God would somehow understand if they compromised their beliefs in order to make a living. Although it was a convenient way to have it both ways, it was in direct opposition to God’s call to be faithful in all situations. Jesus warned those in Thyatira who followed such teaching that they would face severe consequences.
How about us? Are there times when our desire to make a living supersedes our desire to be faithful? Do we often compromise our faith because we are afraid of losing our job? Do we sometimes practice a different set of values on the job than the ones we profess to believe? Have we bought into the lie that it’s alright to do so?
It is important for us to realize that sin is never justified; no matter the situation. If we have been trying to justify our actions, we need to realize there is no justification and repent. Not only does God forgive, he also honors our faithfulness by being faithful to us.
Those who are able to overcome the temptation to compromise are the ones who find the true and eternal riches that no earthly occupation can ever provide.
