What is love?
For some, love is a philosophical concept. For others it is an ethical principle. Many churches have made it a core belief. Others have used it to rationalize a variety of lifestyles or as an excuse to be permissive.
What is love…really?
1 John 4:10 (NIV2011)
“This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.”
John 15:13 (NLT)
“There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
Romans 5:8 (NIV2011)
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
God doesn’t really attempt to define love so much as he seeks to demonstrate it. Maybe for us, this Advent season, it would be good to examine how our concepts, principles, beliefs, and rationalizations of what love is in the light of God’s demonstrations of love.
It can be pretty revealing…and pretty humbling as well.
Gratefully,
