- Mistaken Identity

Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. – John 8:34-36
If you are in Christ, your freedom is not a future possibility but a present reality. The Gospel of John records Jesus saying that if we abide in His word, we will know the truth, and the truth will set us free. That means tomorrow morning when the old accusations creep back in, when regret whispers your name, when temptation feels familiar, you do not have to negotiate with it. You can answer it with truth. You are not who you were. You are not defined by what you did or what was done to you. You are defined by what Jesus has done. Freedom begins in the mind as we choose to believe Him over our feelings, and it grows as we take small, obedient steps that line up with who we already are in Him.
So today, live like someone who has been released from prison. Refuse to rehearse old shame. Refuse to define yourself by your worst moment. Instead, walk in gratitude, pursue what is right, forgive quickly, love boldly, and stand firm when sin calls your name. The Spirit of God lives in you, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. This is not pretending. This is not positive thinking. This is identity rooted in the finished work of Christ. Because of Jesus, you are free, so take a deep breath, lift your head, and step into the day as a son or daughter who no longer wears chains.
Prayer:
Father, thank You that through Jesus I am truly free, not defined by my past, my sin, or my shame, but by Your grace and truth. Help me abide in Your Word today, stand firm against every lie, and live in the freedom and righteousness You have given me.
