Unrest on the Inside

Anger is a powerful emotion that often masks something deeper—wounds we’ve buried, disappointments we haven’t processed, or injustices we’ve silently carried. Like a fire smoldering underground, it doesn’t always show itself right away, but it quietly weakens everything around it. Scripture teaches us that “the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God” (James 1:20). In other words, unchecked anger will not lead to the life God desires for you. If we want peace on the outside, we must first deal with the unrest on the inside.

Jesus invites us into something radically different. He doesn’t just say “stop being angry”; He offers us a new way to live. He calls us to forgive, not because the people who hurt us deserve it, but because He wants us to live free. Forgiveness cancels the debt, closes the case, and lets us move forward. That doesn’t mean pretending the pain never happened; it means refusing to let it control our present or our future. True freedom begins when we let go of what they owe and cling instead to what God has already given us in Christ: mercy, grace, and healing.

This week, ask God to help you identify one area of anger that needs healing. Maybe it’s something you’ve carried for years, or maybe it’s fresh. Don’t bury it, bring it to God. Let Him begin the work of transformation in your heart. When we let Him clean out the mess inside, He makes space for peace, kindness, and joy to take root.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
You see the parts of me that I’ve hidden from everyone else. You see the anger I carry, some of it justified, some of it not, but all of it weighing me down. Today, I choose to be honest with You. I don’t want to be controlled by what others have done to me. I want to be made new from the inside out. Help me to forgive as You’ve forgiven me. Replace bitterness with compassion and rage with peace. Do what only You can do. Heal the broken places in me and make me whole again. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
