There is a children’s series of book called “The Mysteries Benedict Society.” In this fictional series there is a mysterious threat that plagues the world in the form of secret messages transmitted into people’s minds via television and radio signals. These messages have created the illusion of international panic known as “The Emergency”. Mr. Benedict invites a group of children to form a team to stop the Sender from sending them. A common theme in these books is the phrase “There is no one at the wheel.” You see this on street signs, billboards, and on the news. The villain in these books wants everyone to be afraid and doubt that they can call anyone for help!
Sometimes we can feel this way when we look out at the hurt, pain, and corruption we see in our society. Is there anyone at the wheel? Daniel knew that there was. “He removes kings and sets up kings; . . . The Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will. . . . He does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, ‘What have you done?’” (Daniel 2:21; 4:17, 35) Even when things seem out of control, even when all looks like it is lost… remember that there is someone at the wheel! God is in control. When leaders fail us… He knows. When the economy is bad… God is still good. When chaos seems to abound… know that God has a plan. His eye is on the sparrow, how much more does He watch over us. “The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he will” (Proverbs 21:1).
When you’re overwhelmed with fear and confusion, don’t panic! Have peace, because God is at the wheel.
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:21).
