The Dog and the Bone- What Aesop and the Bible Can Teach Us About Greed

We have probably all read at least one Aesop’s fables about greed, vanity, and kindness. He was very talented at teaching a lesson with a short story. See if you can figure out this lesson.

“A Dog, to whom the butcher had thrown a bone, was hurrying home with his prize as fast as he could go. As he crossed a narrow footbridge, he happened to look down and saw himself reflected in the quiet water, as if in a mirror. But the greedy Dog thought he saw a real Dog carrying a bone much bigger than his own. If he had stopped to think he would have known better. But instead of thinking, he dropped his bone and sprang at the Dog in the river, only to find himself swimming for dear life to reach the shore. At last, he managed to scramble out, and as he stood sadly thinking about the good bone he had lost, he realized what a foolish Dog he had been.”

Greed is the opposite of gratitude. Growing up, whenever we went to a store with my dad, he said the phrase “Turn your want-er off” ten or more times. He was trying to teach us that we don’t have to “want.”

We are bombarded constantly with the idea that we deserve more. But God wants us to live a life full of gratitude instead. When we feel those “wants” creeping up, take the time to thank God for what He already has given you!

Psalms 9:1 ESV “I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.”

In Christ,
Pastor Phil
