Thanksgiving Every Day

My mom makes the best stuffing; it’s not even close. Don’t get me wrong, I can eat almost any type of stuffing (except for that kind with oysters in it. That’s just weird). For clarity, dressing is not stuffing. I lived in the South for ten years, and they serve this stale bread and called it Thanksgiving? It’s shameful.

For all the great things about Thanksgiving, one thing I don’t love is the tradition of going around the table and sharing things that make you thankful. It seems so awkward and forced. There is so much pressure. Everyone is looking at you. You are also so nervous that someone is going to steal your “thing.” I have a bad habit of making jokes when I feel uncomfortable, so I am always tempted to shout out something like “I am thankful for toenail clippers!”

But what if I made it a daily practice of giving thanks – being grateful – and noticing the things God has done for me? Psalm 9:1 says, “I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.”

We have all seen the spoiled brat in Walmart yelling at his mom to buy him something and never saying “thank you.” I’m afraid I am closer to that brat then I want to be. I challenge you to write down ten things right now that God has done for you.

Go ahead.

OK, are you done?

Now spend ten minutes giving thanks over those ten things.

I bet by the end of that time of prayer you will be wondering why you don’t do that more often. Let’s fix that. Give thanks!

In Christ,
Pastor Phil
