- What Causes You to Believe?

“The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.” – John 9:11 (NIV)
A man, blind from birth, has been healed by Jesus. When the man returns to his home, his skeptical neighbors question him about how something like this could happen. At this point, all he knew was “the man they call Jesus” had made it possible for him to see.
Although he could not see Jesus, the man had heard His voice. We are not told the details, but there must been something in that voice to make this man decide to trust “the man they call Jesus” at least enough give Jesus’ instructions a chance.
Because he’s willing to hear Jesus and open the door of his heart enough to give Jesus a chance, God’s Spirit is able to reveal more and more of the truth concerning Jesus. In doing so, not only does he receive his physical sight, but he is able to gain his spiritual sight as well. Finally, when Jesus calls on him to decide if he really believes in Him, the man is able to say with confidence, “Lord, I believe.”
Jesus takes the divine initiative to seek us and call us to Himself. For some, there is something that causes them to believe instantly. For others, like this man, it’s a process. Regardless of how it happens, though, the offer of new spiritual eyesight is available to everyone.
What about you? Will you at least hear His voice, open the door of your heart, and let Him begin the process in you?
