“I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.” – The Apostles Creed
This is a big deal! This is a big statement! There is more than just what we can feel, taste, smell, and touch. As we believe this we are rebelling against the culture and narratives of humanism and materialism. We are saying we are not just a collection of cells that randomly built and improved on themselves over a millions and millions of years. We are not an accident, there is a hand outside of nature that has guided this, we are saying we believe in the supernatural.
Actually, if we think about it we are really saying that we only believe in the supernatural. We believe that every day we wake up is a wonder, every morning is a miracle, every minute is a marvel, every season is a sensation, every moment is a mystery. See the problem is not that God is silent in our lives, it’s that He is moving so much we have become numb to it.
Tori has always slept with a box fan. When we got married that was a real problem for me. It was so loud. But as the years have gone by, I don’t even hear it anymore. In fact the only time I hear it at night is when it stops. I am awakened by the absence of its noise. The power goes off and all the sudden I notice the fan. God is not silent. God is busy. Even when we don’t see Him He is working. Pray He never stops working or we would be horribly aware.
“Our God is an infinitely powerful and intensely personal father” – Matt Chandler.
After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. – Matthew 6:9-13
Here we see in the Lord’s Prayer that God is infinitely powerful and yet intensely personal. Let’s think of the most powerful person that we can imagine right? A king or a president? Imagine being their child. Imagine the power that man holds. He has the power to build cities, to command armies, to define law, and yet he still makes you peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Your father in heaven is Holy. He has a kingdom that nothing can stop. His will will be done, not just on earth but throughout the universe and into the heavens. But yet He wants to everyday supply your debts. He wants to forgive you of your wrongdoing and mistakes, to lead and deliver you. Your father is infinitely powerful and also intensely personal!
God is beyond us but also so near to us.
