Are you following a Pied Piper? You remember the story. A town with a rat infestation needed help. They met a man dressed in multicolored (“pied”) clothing, who was a rat-catcher. The town hired him to lure rats away with his magic pipe, but then the citizens refuse to pay for this service. He retaliates by using his instrument’s magical power on their children, leading them away as he had the rats. Fairy tales are pretty dark sometimes!
It’s easy for us to listen to the sweet melody of our culture. It ebbs and flows in beauty promising to fulfill us. But the promises of bands of gold soon become chains. We can’t fall into sleepwalking by this lullaby, it’s too dangerous. It’s too easy to get to the end of our lives and realize we made very little difference. God has something so much bigger for us. He doesn’t want us to dance to the melody of materialism, arrogance, or selfishness. God calls us to be distinct, to swim against the current.
People should know us by our outrageous acts of love, mercy, grace, and forgiveness. This is only possible by walking in the Spirit.
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” – Romans 12:2
