Christians are not immune when it comes to discouragement. We all go through times of discouragement to some degree.
Maybe you’re there right now. Someone you trusted has betrayed you. The marriage you thought would last forever is headed toward divorce. The promotion you had worked so hard to earn goes to someone else. In each case, the excitement you once felt is replaced by discouragement.
Sometimes our discouragement is the result of false expectations. For example, we thought when we accepted Jesus as our Savior all our problems would be over.
However, Jesus never promised that those who accept him would live easy and problem free lives. He actually said, in pretty plain terms… “In this world you WILL have trouble.” His promise is that he will be with us in trouble and that the power He gives us is sufficient to overcome our troubles. We find real encouragement when we go to God’s Word and let the Spirit show us God’s truth and enlighten us as to God’s plan.
It is also encouraging to know that, in our times of discouragement, Jesus is walking by our side, even though we might not recognize him right away. You might not see him because your vision and judgment are clouded by your disappointment. You might not see him because he hasn’t disclosed his plan to you just yet.
But, rest assured, he is there.
